He looked around the park and took in the view one last time. He tried to engrave on his mind where every bench was, and the young blooming trees that were finally putting life into the old park.
He wanted the moment to last forever because he would never have it again once it was over.
But that was not the only thing he was losing, he reminded himself.
History will forever remember us.
Our story will be engraved in the hearts of romantics and lovers of aesthetics. We were, for the briefest of time, eternity. Time, as short as it was with you, was infinite. And every day together could never have been better.
It’s that season that we have hoped for for so long. A season with long cold nights, and the sound of rainfall on the window. When mornings would gladly be pushed back as far as possible while we cuddle under the sheets.
We thought it would fix everything wrong. We hoped and prayed it would.
They were driving fast. She was behind the wheels and she always said the fast lane was meant for fast driving.
It was late but the moon was full and the night was bright. Their eyes were almost reflecting the twinkling stars.
It was a few minutes before midnight. The street was deserted and the yellow street lamps cast a warm shade on the empty road.
She was wearing my sweater and we were walking arm in arm, her head gently resting on my shoulder. It was a peaceful night and all I could think about was how lucky we were to be together.
I have been away from home for a while. I don’t regret the life I’ve chosen, I don’t yet want to turn around and put an end to my travelling. Because this is something I’ve wanted for so long.
Many nights, I dreamt of what this would feel like. Backpacking from one destination to the next. Meeting new people, eating new foods and taking a picture of the night sky every day I’m alive to see it.
The moment the word came out of my mouth, I realised what a big mistake I had made. She turned dramatically, like in slow motion, her brows furrowed. Slit-eyed and arms akimbo, she looked like she’d apprenticed with the Witch in Snow White.
“What do you mean? No, no, no. I mean, can you explain what you just said?”
Her voice was barely above a whisper but the coldness in it sent a shiver down my spine.
