I quite miss home

I have been away from home for a while. I don’t regret the life I’ve chosen, I don’t yet want to turn around and put an end to my travelling. Because this is something I’ve wanted for so long.

Many nights, I dreamt of what this would feel like. Backpacking from one destination to the next. Meeting new people, eating new foods and taking a picture of the night sky every day I’m alive to see it.

That was the plan and I don’t regret a mile I’ve travelled farther from where my roots sprung.

But tonight, my niece is on my mind. I remember how she had sat on my laps the night before I left.

“Uncle, when are you coming back?” She’d asked, her eyes searching.

“I don’t know, pumpkin.” I said.

She had sighed and it was a cute sigh that made me wonder what was going on in her pretty little mind. Then she’d looked at me again and wrapped her tiny arms around me.

“I love you, uncle. I will miss you.”

My throat had tightened.

“Will you call me when you get there?”

I nodded, hard. Yes, I’ll call her as often as I can.

I just took the picture of the orange sunset and there’s this cloud that looks like my niece’s hand.

I picked up the phone and dialled home, waiting for one of the best things in my life.

“Uncle!” I heard her shout over the phone.

I can’t help smiling.

I love the travelling life but tonight I quite miss home.
