They were driving fast. She was behind the wheels and she always said the fast lane was meant for fast driving.
It was late but the moon was full and the night was bright. Their eyes were almost reflecting the twinkling stars.
The only sounds to be heard were the purring of the engine and the swooshing of air from the rolled-down windows. Then he turned on the radio. Adekunle Gold and Simi’s “By You” was playing. They exchange looks and grinned like teenagers.
One would think this was their first date but they’d been together three years now and they only seemed to be growing closer. It was the fairy tale kind of thing and sometimes when she was alone, she would pinch herself to see if she was dreaming.
He was perfection embodied. Not that they didn’t have misunderstandings but he was the kind of person who worried about the right things and called her out on her bullshit, occasionally.
When they first met, he promised to stay. She didn’t believe him because that was a promise that meant little to her at that point in her life.
But he’d stayed. All her baggage he’d helped her unpack, one tangled mess after the other. And he’d opened his closet and she’d seen his skeletons.
She had thought she would be scared but instead her messed up stuff fit right next to his and it was the home she never knew she needed.
“I’ll be right by youuuu,” he sang along, his musical voice pulling on the strings of her heart. She smiled again and reached out for him. He took her hand and squeezed it. She knew he’d always be there and that made her happy.
The car was almost floating by now. And she couldn’t worry about forever; all that mattered was that moment with him. He was everything to her and if it was all a dream, she’d stay in it forever.
She sighed as he lifted her hand to his warm lips and gently kissed it. She closed her eyes and let the emotions rush. It was heaven. She could no longer hear the sound of the car. All she could feel was eternity.
The blaring of horns drew her back to earth as her eyes flew open. But all she saw were two monstrous headlights directly in front of her. The last thing she felt after impact was his hand squeezing hers one last time.
