He looked around the park and took in the view one last time. He tried to engrave on his mind where every bench was, and the young blooming trees that were finally putting life into the old park.
He wanted the moment to last forever because he would never have it again once it was over.
But that was not the only thing he was losing, he reminded himself.
He checked his watch; it was still early, so he sat on an empty bench. He couldn’t help but feel his heart sink as he looked across the park to where he first met Dinma.
He could almost see the spark in her eyes as she smiled at him that day. He later found out, though, that she had been smiling at a friend behind him, but that gorgeous smile was what got him hooked to her.
But he had to leave. He was never great with staying but this was the one time he wished he could stay. Dinma had made life worth it here for the three months he had known her. It was sad that it had to come to an end.
Maybe it was true what his best friend told him; maybe it really was selfish of him to get attached when he always knew he was going to leave. It was not fair to Dinma.
He got up, looked around one last time and began walking away. He reckoned, as he left, that looking Dinma in the eyes and saying goodbye would be the hardest thing he’d ever have to do.
It would be better if he didn’t. Maybe he was being selfish again, but it was the way it had to be. Someday she’d understand why, he told himself.
