Making Waves

Marta’s day was going just as planned. She finally got on a call with a prospective client she’d been trying to reach or a while and it went fine.

That was in the morning. Feeling like she had achieved something worthy for the day, she sat in front of her computer and googled one of her guilty pleasures.

It was something she didn’t like thinking about, not to talk of talking about it with someone else. It was just a mindless thing that made her feel good about herself. So when her phone rang, she jumped, because she felt like she had been caught committing a crime.

But it was just Micky. Micky knew her well enough that she immediately felt better. She didn’t really care if Mickey discovered any of her skeletons.

He wanted to know if she would get on the call with him later when he spoke with one of the partners. She said sure, the partner liked her so it should make the conversation go smoother.

After that, she didn’t really feel like doing something mindless, but still wasn’t in the mood for serious work. She had spent quite some time with the client trying to make her commit. It was mentally draining. So she logged on to Twitter instead and looked for a thread that would distract her.

That was when she saw the news. It was posted by Rejoice. She knew Rejoice by reputation even before meeting her. At first, she had been disappointed.

Rejoice was a short slim girl, by anyone’s standard, and had an accent. She had a thing for baggy clothes. As someone who liked to cause so much trouble on her timeline, she expected to see a fierce person when she first met Rejoice but the small lady had a wide smile that lit up her face and the room. It had made Marta like her more, eventually.

When they both decided to work on a human rights project together, Marta had been elated; she had admired Rejoice’s work for a while. The project was successful and she had kept in touch with the fierce lively lady since then.

Until Rejoice fell off the grid.

Marta felt her heart skip a beat as she saw the handle plain and simple, beaming at her. There had been rumours that some politician had sent his thugs to kidnap Rejoice and no one knew her whereabouts.

But nothing concrete had surfaced to support the claim. It didn’t help that she had confided in Marta before going offline that she was working on something huge.

And now Rejoice was back. And the number of likes on her latest tweet could predict that things were about to get messy.

Marta swallowed hard, got up, went into her drawer and brought out a small phone. She hit “3” and speed dialed a preset number. The phone rang twice before it was answered.

There was an awkward silence. Then a scratching sound. Then a low “yes”, before the hang-up. Marta sighed with relief. Replaced the phone and went back to her computer. She un-hid a folder titled Rejoice and smiled. The dance must now begin, she thought as she opened a file…

Prompt: Rejoice
