Understanding the ‘fours’ of complex projects

When you put two and two together, you’re supposed to get something straightforward, like a four. Because we know what twos are made of. Ones.

It’s easier to make sense of fours when you remember that they are just sums of twos, gotten from sums of ones.

That’s the reality behind almost everything in life. They are made up of little ones that you can easily understand. And when you take a moment to deconstruct something, no matter how intimidating it seems at first , you find out you can make sense of it.

The deconstruction is where the work is. Not that we don’t usually know this, we just don’t actively factor it into our reality when we encounter an intimidating project, challenge, situation, what have you.
And we ignore it because we don’t want to commit. Because commitment to deconstruction (hence understanding) takes time and effort.

But when we want to understand right away, we choose to ignore instead when anything stands in the way of ‘right away’. And we complain.

And complaining further grants the illusion that our fours are made of something more complex than ones.

Everything takes time and effort. Shortcuts are like mirages. From a distance, they look like they are the best route to our destination. But when you get there, you find out you have missed a lot of 1ups you could have picked up along the right path, that you now need.

Take your time. Commit. Understand.
